1. Think of this like a fun adventure with a few clear steps, especially with AI lending a hand! Try it!
- First things first, you’ll need to set up your KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) account. It’s like setting up your author workspace! Make sure to add your bank details and complete the tax questionnaire
- Also, remember to be transparent about using AI in your book when Amazon asks – it’s part of their guidelines
- Brainstorming time! Use everything you can. But we are here to speak about using AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini to conjure up ideas, themes, and even catchy titles for your story so use it.
- Pick something close to your heart, like animals, kids, or fun adventures, ask your kids! Make them smile and enjoy
- Get inspired by checking out popular children’s books on Amazon!
- See what styles, narratives, or morals you like, what sells, who are best selling after the first 10 listed, see different categories and age best selling books.
2. Write Your Story- Where Magic Happens
Now, start writing! ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini can help you research themes and expand your story
Remember: the story is yours. AI can sometimes make mistakes or “hallucinate,” so your authentic voice is KEY.
For children’s stories, keep them simple, musical, with a clear moral
TIP As you write, vividly describe your characters, settings, and actions. This will be super helpful later when you create AI illustrations prompts!
3. Create Illustrations (AI’s Artistic Touch!)
Guess what? You don’t need to know how to draw to create fantastic illustrations for your book! AI can do the heavy lifting.
Start by experimenting with free and open-source AI image generation tools
TIP: Always check their terms to ensure you can use the images commercially
For absolute beginners Bing/DALL-E 3 is a great starting point because it’s known for “understanding” your descriptions well. Once you feel more confident, you can explore Flux/SDXL, Stable Diffusion, platform like Adobe Firefly, Leonardo AI, Recraft or other platforms like Nightcaffe, play on AiPlayground, Kittl, and others. Many offers free tiers, credits or free creation with some models to start with. Check them all.
I‘m particularly fond of Nightcafe which is one of my first platform i start experimenting and community to learn from. You can use NightCafe to generate unlimited base Stable Diffusion creations for free. Everyone gets a free credit top-up every day plus you can earn more credits through participating in community. You can try on their platform AI art generator models like Flux, Stable Diffusion, Dall-e 3, Ideogram, Google Imagen, plus video models like LUMA Dream Machine and Stable Video Diffusion.
Let say something about speaking with AI or Prompting – your secret artistic language! This is how you tell the AI what image to create.
TIP Always put what’s most important in the image first in your description
▪ Try to follow a simple pattern:
• Type of image: (e.g., “cartoon drawing,” “watercolor painting”)
• Subject: (e.g., “a playful puppy,” “a quirky astronaut”)
• Action: (e.g., “eating spaghetti,” “dancing in the rain”)
• Subject Description: (e.g., “wearing a tiny crown,” “with rainbow fur”)
• Background/Surroundings: (e.g., “in a garden of giant lollipops,” “on a planet made of jello”)
▪ Be specific with details like colors, lighting, or the overall mood
▪ Think of it as a conversation with the AI: you’ll type a prompt, see what it generates, then tweak and refine your prompt until you get exactly what you envision.
▪ You can even ask ChatGPT or Gemini to act as a “prompt engineer” to help you write more detailed and effective prompts
Websites like Lexica.art are also treasure troves for seeing prompts others have used and not only, learn by doing.
4. Put It All Together Finally – Your Book’s Look
◦ Use a user-friendly design tool like Canva (the free version works perfectly for this!) to arrange your story text and generated images onto pages
◦ Pick a book size that fits your vision, like a fun square 21×21 cm
◦ Ensure your AI-generated images are in high resolution (300 dpi) for crisp printing
TIP If they’re not, use AI upscale tools to boost their quality. Don’t drag images in Canva to upscale them, you check px dimensions, before uploading them in Canva, that the image resolution in px is enough for the book dimensions you are working on. It should be 300DPI.
◦ Design an eye-catching cover! It’s super important for making your book stand out on Amazon’s virtual shelves
◦ Amazon provide you with a free ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for your book, keep space on your cover for this!
◦ Once your layout is done, export your book in Canva or Book Bolt or Affinity Designer as a PDF for printing.
5. Publish and Share – Your Grand Debut!
◦ Upload your finished book to KDP
◦ Carefully preview your book before publishing to catch any last-minute tweaks
TIP For physical books, you have the option to order a proof copy to hold it in your hands before it goes live – highly recommended!
◦ Finally, set your book’s price and royalty rate
◦ After publishing, don’t stop there! Promote your book using KDP’s marketing tools like KDP Select and A+ Content
Sharing on social media is a great idea and maybe the one that really function. Specially when you cant afford ads.
Things change fast so check updates!
